What is this study about?
The study examines what role teachers can play in promoting positive relationships between students of different ethnic backgrounds. The focus lies on the conditions teachers have for this work, the strategies they use in everyday school life, and the difficulties they encounter. The study thereby directs attention to the school as an important social environment where young people's experiences of diversity, inclusion, and relationships with other groups are shaped.
What did we find?
The results show that teachers can work actively to create positive interethnic relationships by promoting contact and cooperation between students, counteracting exclusion, and creating a classroom climate characterized by respect and inclusion. At the same time, the possibilities are affected by the conditions of the school and the student group. Creating positive relationships is therefore not a matter of individual measures, but of long-term work in which teaching, social relationships, and the school environment interact.
Why does it matter?
School is one of the most important environments where young people of different social and ethnic backgrounds meet in everyday life. How these encounters work can matter for young people's views of other groups, sense of belonging, and opportunities for integration. The study therefore shows why teachers' work on the relationships between students is an important part of the school's democratic and integrating mission – and why positive interethnic relationships need to be created actively rather than taken for granted.
