What is this study about?
The report examines how local civil society in Ludvika reacted to the Nordic Resistance Movement's presence and activities in the municipality. The focus is on how local associations and organisations perceived the far-right presence, how it affected their activities, and what forms of action were developed. The report thus examines the role civil society can play when democratic values are challenged at the local level.
What did we find?
The report shows that the Nordic Resistance Movement's presence provoked reactions within local civil society, but that the organisations responded to the situation in different ways. The reactions included various forms of mobilisation, demonstrations, advocacy and other activities directed against the far-right presence. The results thus show both civil society's capacity to mobilise in defence of democracy and the variation in how local organisations choose to act when they encounter far-right extremism.
Why does it matter?
Threats to democratic values become particularly concrete when anti-democratic movements establish themselves and act in people's local communities. The report shows that the defence of democracy does not occur only through the state, political parties and formal institutions. Local associations and organisations can also mobilise people, assert democratic norms and develop various forms of resistance. At the same time, the variation between organisations shows why civil society's role in the defence of democracy should not be taken for granted or seen as uniform.
